Twenty medical students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, who had been abducted, have been rescued after nine days in captivity.
Their release was confirmed on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi.
During the rescue operation, which involved multiple security agencies, including the police and the National Security Adviser, a total of 27 people, including the medical students, were freed.
The students were on their way to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students annual convention when they were kidnapped on August 15, near Ojano village along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road.
This area, particularly the Otukpo/Otukpa section of the highway, is notorious for criminal activity, with numerous incidents of kidnapping reported in the past.
Despite the presence of security forces, the road has remained a hotspot for such crimes.
