As the 2027 general elections approach, speculation is growing about the possible defection of five opposition governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to a report by Leadership Newspaper, the governors are Alex Otti (Abia), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Umoh Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta).
Other unconfirmed reports alleged that Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke is also reportedly planning to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure his second term but the governor’s media aide, Olawale Rasheed already debunked the report.
Currently serving their first terms, these governors are facing internal challenges within their parties—Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Sources disclosed that the instability in their parties could push them to consider new political platforms.
Notably, political shifts have been common in Nigeria since 1999, with over 20 governors switching parties while in office.
However, the governors and their parties have denied the rumours.
Party officials in Abia, Enugu, and Delta insisted that the claims are baseless and meant to cause division.
Some political observers argued that such rumours could stem from APC’s efforts to weaken opposition states ahead of the next election cycle.
