Multiple hippopotamus seen at flood ravaged community in Anambra state

Residents of Oroma-Etiti community in Anambra West LGA, Anambra, have reportedly spotted a herd of hippopotamus swimming in the flooded area.

In a video seen by Dockaysworld, a number of the exotic animals could be seen frolicking the waters.

The indigenes who spoke in their local Anam dialect [an igala speaking dialect in anambara state], marveled at the sight of the rarely seen semi-aquatic beings.

Recall that the flooding situation in Nigeria has worsened with multiple states becoming submerged due to increased waters flowing into the country from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon.

According to the federal government, over 603 lives have been lost with 2,504,095 persons affected, 1,302,589 have been displaced and 2,407 injured.

The minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, Hajiya Sadiya Farouk said 121,318 houses have been partially damaged and 82,053 others completely destroyed, as well as 332,327 hectares of farmlands damaged.

The flooding situation has worsened due to the fact that the Nigerian government failed to build a buffer dam decades ago to hold the excess waters released from the Lagdo dam.

Countless bodies continue to wash up as the situation worsens. The situation has also affected some key aspects of the economy including supply of fuel and also cost of food.

The floods have left portions of Kogi state waterlogged thereby cutting off the movement of petroleum tankers to the federal capital territory. This has led to hike in fuel prices in Abuja.

Food prices have also begin to fluctuate as the road to transport them to final consumers have been covered by water.
