Former Akwa Ibom Governor Godswill Akpabio of the All Progressives Congress has emerged as the Senate president of Nigeria after defeating closest rivals.
The former Minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022, represents Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial zone.
Akpabio who was the anointed candidate of the APC garnered the most votes despite rebelling from some within the party including Senator Yari.
Akpabio, emerged winner after polling 63 votes defeating Senator Abdulaziz Yari from Zamfara North West, who is also of the APC.
Earlier, Senator Ali Ndume from Borno South, nominated Akpabio while Senator-elect Elisha Abbo from Adamawa North nominated Yari.
