Rema wins VMA best Afrobeats Award after defeating Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr [video]
Nigerian musician Rema has won the inaugural Best Afrobeats category at the MTV VMAs
Multiple award winning Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has won the very first Best Afrobeats award category at the MTV Video Music Award.
Rema won the category for the remix of his hit song “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez in Newark, New Jersey, United States of America.
The best afrobeats category was introduced just the this year for the 2023 edition.
Rema in his acceptance speech thanked all the Afrobeats legends that came before him as he said their impact had led him to his own success.
Rema’s ‘Calm Down,’ was nominated alongside Burna Boy’s ‘It’s Plenty,’ Davido feat Musa Key’s ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ Wizkid feat Ayrra Starr’s ‘2 Sugar,’ and Fireboy DML’s ‘Bandana.
