The Department of State Services (DSS) has recovered over N580 million from Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to Sahara Reporters, the former anti-corruption chief coughed up over N580 million illegally acquired during his time as the head of the agency.

Bawa has been in detention and is being investigated over allegations of misconduct during his tenure.

Since his suspension in June, President Bola Tinubu had cited “weighty allegations of abuse of office” as the reason for Bawa’s removal and subsequent detention.

Pressure has been mounting on the DSS to either release Bawa or formally charge him with offenses identified during their investigation.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) had previously threatened legal action against President Tinubu’s administration for the prolonged detention of Bawa without formal charges.

During his detention, Bawa refused to cooperate with DSS investigators and has consistently declined to provide statements, asserting that he should not be detained without specific charges.
