ShopRite, SPAR have been reportedly sealed by Enugu State Government for allegedly failing to remit purchase taxes in their malls after receiving multiple warning notices.
The State Internal Revenue Service (ESiRS) enforcement team conducted the sealing on Tuesday morning.
Other closed businesses include Roban, Mama Onyinye restaurant, among others. The ESIRS HOD for eateries, bars, hotels, and shopping malls, Egwuonwu Perpetual, stated that despite several visits and requests for purchase tax remittance, these businesses have not complied.
Egwuonwu mentioned that, despite efforts, ShopRite has consistently failed to meet tax obligations, while some others, like Roban store, have cooperated.
The malls will remain closed until the issues are resolved, according to Egwuonwu. ESIRS spokesperson Nnamdi Eneh emphasized that the closure is a measure to compel businesses to fulfill their tax responsibilities after public enlightenment efforts proved insufficient.
