A host of journalists, activists and civil society organisations have stormed the police force headquarters in Abuja to demand the release of Daniel Ojukwu, an investigative journalist who’s been in detention for about a week.
Ojukwu who is a journalist with the foundation for investigative journalism, was quietly whisked away by the police and transferred from Lagos to Abuja with minimal contact allowed him to his family and the outside world.
The police confirmed that Mr Ojukwu was in their custody on Sunday, five days after his sudden disappearance. The journalist is accused of violating the Cybercrime Prohibition act 2015 though he’s yet to be charged to court.
Taking to the streets, Nigerians are calling for release of the journalist and that the law be followed if the police believe he has indeed committed a crime.
There were placards and cardboards calling for his release as some figures such as Omoyele Sowore, Deji Adeyanju and others decried an injustice.
Recall Fisayo Soyombo who’s FIJ Publisher said Ojukwu was arrested over his investigative work uncovering discrepancies in the government’s budgeting and implementation.
The clamour for the release of Ojukwu continues to gain momentum as various pressure groups and organisations seek clarity and justice on the peculiar situation.
