Three Rivers State Commissioners have resigned from the cabinet of Governor Siminalayi Fubara citing different reasons including Toxicity within the government.
The Commissioner for Housing, Gift Worlu, submitted his resignation detailed in a letter dated May 15 and addressed through the state government’s secretary’s office. This came after the resignation of the Commissioner for Education, Professor Prince Chinedu Mmom.
Worlu‘s letter expressed regret at the necessity of the decision, citing a “toxic atmosphere” within the government as the reason.
The letter reads:
“I write to formally resign my appointment as the Honourable Commissioner of Housing. One of the most difficult decision in my life yet, it is precipitated by the toxic atmosphere that has characterised our working relationship, especially the smouldering arbitrariness of decisions and actions, including the attempt to fuse the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers state.
“I thank you for the opportunity to serve in your government and wish you the best as you continue to steer the ship of state.<span;>“Kindly accept assurances of my esteemed regards.”
Professor Mmom, a known supporter of former governor Nyesom Wike, also tendered his resignation on the same day, emphasizing the detrimental impact of the “toxic” work environment on achieving sectoral targets.
His letter, dated May 15, referenced loss of trust, animosity, and division among colleagues, highlighting the challenges faced within the State Executive Council.
Recall that Professor Mmom had previously resigned during a political crisis, only to return as Commissioner for Education.
The letter read:
“It is a truism that a calm, safe and friendly environment would stimulate efficient service delivery and enhanced productivity.
“It is however unfortunate to note that my current work space has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favourable environment to enable me realize my set targets for the Education sector in the State.
“There is loss of trust, animosity and sharp division among colleagues in the same cabinet which is unhealthy and very unfortunate.
“I want to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity to serve in your cabinet and wish your administration well.
“Kindly accept the assurances of my esteemed regards.”
Similarly, Commissioner for Environment Austen Ben-Chioma announced his resignation, citing the ongoing political turmoil in the state as a contributing factor.
His letter reads:
“I want to appreciate Your Excellency for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the State Executive Council. My decision to resign is due to the political crisis befalling our dear state and other personal reasons”
These resignations seem to be part of the Continuous political war between the Governor and his predecessor and estranged Godfather Nyesom Wike whom he has vowed to probe.
