The ongoing protest against economic hardship, hunger and bad governance in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, and Kaduna states has escalated into violence.
It appears that hoodlums have hijacked the previously peaceful protest, according to viral reports across the nation.
They are now throwing sticks, causing destruction, burning tyres, and have even set a police station on fire, thereby straining police efforts to manage the situation.
Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, revealed that officers are struggling to handle the increasingly aggressive demonstrators who are converging from multiple locations.
Initially, the protest was confined to the Moshood Abiola Stadium, but participants have moved towards Eagle Square, leading to intensified clashes.
The police have resorted to using teargas to disperse the crowd and prevent them from reaching Eagle Square.
Despite earlier assurances from the police command that the situation was under control, the unexpected spread of protesters has complicated efforts to maintain order.
“The protesters are coming out from different locations and are becoming violent.
“We are trying to curtail them but currently, they are being very violent,” she said.
