The Federal Government has taken decisive action by suspending the senior officers overseeing the Maximum and Minimum Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Lagos State.
This move follows the emergence of an audio recording that revealed a scandal involving Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in prison but reportedly received preferential treatment, including access to an apartment outside the facility.
Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), announced the suspensions in a statement from Abuja.
He revealed that this step was necessary to facilitate a thorough investigation into the allegations surrounding the conduct of the officers.
The suspended officials include Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller overseeing the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre.
Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, has been suspended for allegedly escorting an inmate outside the facility.
Furthermore, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, also a Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, is facing suspension for reportedly accepting payments on behalf of an inmate.
The Board has committed to publicly sharing the findings of the investigation once it is completed.
