A shocking incident involving the alleged maltreatment of a junior soldier by a senior officer in the Nigerian Army’s 93 Battalion has stirred outrage and calls for accountability.
The incident occurred on the morning of January 12, 2025, during preparations for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day parade in Jalingo.
Lance Corporal Samuel P. reportedly arrived late for the mustering, prompting Lieutenant B. Mohammed to reprimand him.
According to eyewitnesses, the lieutenant ordered the soldier to perform “forward rolls” as punishment before taking a stick from Sergeant Steven and flogging him.
A photograph obtained by SaharaReporters shows the soldier’s leg bandaged and stained with blood, corroborating the allegations of physical abuse.
The alleged act has sparked widespread discontent among soldiers in the battalion, many of whom are expressing concerns over what they describe as a troubling pattern of maltreatment of lower-ranking personnel.
“This goes beyond discipline; it’s outright abuse,” said one soldier, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“While discipline is necessary in the military, it must be enforced within the boundaries of human dignity and established regulations.”
The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
However, soldiers within the 93 Battalion are calling for an immediate and thorough investigation to address the allegations and prevent further instances of such abuse.
