The Police Service Commission (PSC) has directed the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have exceeded 35 years in service or are older than 60.
This decision was made during an extraordinary meeting held on Friday, January 31, 2025, presided over by PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu.
The PSC revisited a previous decision from its 24th plenary meeting in September 2017, which had allowed force entrants to count their appointment date rather than their enlistment date.
After a thorough review, the commission determined that this policy conflicted with established public service rules.
According to Rule No. 020908 (i & ii), public servants must retire upon completing 35 years of service or reaching 60 years of age.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including retired Supreme Court Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, who represents the judiciary, and retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu, who represents the police.
Also present was Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
Following this decision, the directive has been forwarded to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation. Officers affected by this ruling are expected to proceed with retirement as mandated by law.
