U.S. Department of Justice has announced that Edwin Okoronkwo, a Nigerian citizen and lawful permanent resident of the United States, will be deported after serving a 75-month prison sentence for defrauding American victims through an online scam.
Okoronkwo and his wife, Julie Okoronkwo, orchestrated a catfishing scheme, impersonating high-ranking U.S. military officials to deceive unsuspecting individuals.
Julie, who played a crucial role in convincing victims over the phone, was sentenced to 25 months in prison on January 10, while Edwin received his sentence on January 29.
According to court records, the couple used stolen identities and obtained money through fraudulent means, including postal services.
Julie also exploited her job at a hospital to access victims’ sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers and driver’s license details.
The court has ordered Edwin Okoronkwo to pay $342,535 in restitution to his victims and serve a three-year supervised release before deportation.
U.S. District Judge Brian C. Buescher described the crime as a “tragedy for the victims,” emphasizing the severe impact of the fraudulent scheme.
