NANS Intervenes in Attack on UNIZIK Lecturer

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned an incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), where a student allegedly attacked a lecturer over a TikTok video.

In a statement from Ibadan on Wednesday, NANS Senate President Babatunde Akinteye stated that while the association supports students’ rights, it also values discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to school rules.

“NANS fights for students’ rights and academic freedom, but we also believe in discipline and respect for institutions. That’s why we strongly condemn the reported attack on a UNIZIK lecturer over a TikTok recording,” Akinteye said.

He called the student’s actions unacceptable, stating that universities should be places of learning and respect. While students have the right to express themselves, including on social media, they must do so responsibly.

Akinteye also stated that NANS would not support any student involved in unlawful behavior, disrespecting lecturers, or damaging the university’s reputation.

“We urge UNIZIK’s management to carry out a fair and thorough investigation into this incident. If the student is found guilty, appropriate punishment should be given according to school rules to prevent future occurrences,” he added.

He concluded by saying that universities must remain respectful and professional learning environments.
