What Afenifere leader told me before he died – Peter Obi

Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi has revealed the last words of Pa Ayo Adebanjo to him before his death.

The elder statesman and chieftain of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, died at the age of 96 on Friday morning at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.

Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, shared his grief over the loss of the Afenifere leader, describing him as a steadfast advocate for justice and fairness.

Obi expressed his sorrow in a message on social media, stating that Adebanjo’s unwavering support during his presidential campaign was more than political—it was a reflection of his deep commitment to equity and inclusiveness.

He recalled their last conversation, where Adebanjo urged him to always stand on the side of justice, a principle he vowed to uphold in the late leader’s memory.

Obi said:

“The last time I spoke with him, his words left a lasting impression: “Always stand on the path of justice.”

“That advice remains a guiding principle in my life, and I reaffirm my commitment to upholding it in honour of his memory. In my association with Pa Adebanjo, I come to appreciate Nelson Mandela’s words, “I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.”

He extended condolences to Adebanjo’s family and the Afenifere group, acknowledging the elder statesman’s contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape.

Obi called on Nigerians to honour Adebanjo’s legacy by continuing the fight for justice and fairness.
