The head of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has warned that underage students registering for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will face penalties.
While visiting registration centres in Lagos, Oloyede revealed that out of 780,202 candidates registered so far, 11,512 were underage.
He explained that although JAMB allows exceptionally bright students below the age of 16 to register, many people are now misusing this opportunity.
He said underage students who register might end up wasting their money because of the penalties JAMB will introduce.
Oloyede also stated that the registration process has been going smoothly, and there will be no extension of the registration deadline.
He explained that JAMB is registering more students daily than expected.
For instance, they planned to register 60,000 candidates per day, but they are now registering about 80,000 to 100,000 daily.
So far, over 782,000 candidates have registered, and JAMB expects about 2 million applicants in total.
Oloyede is confident that registration will be completed before the five-week deadline.
