The Federal University Lokoja in Kogi State has been shut down indefinitely following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of five students.
The incident occurred on Monday, February 17, 2025, when a trailer lost control and crashed into a shuttle bus carrying students at Felele city center.
In response to the deaths, students took to the streets in protest, blocking the university gates and demanding action to prevent further accidents.
Despite efforts from the state government and university officials to calm the situation, tensions remained high.
Following advice from security agencies, the Vice-Chancellor, after consulting with the management, ordered the immediate closure of both campuses.
Students were instructed to leave the premises by noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The Student Union Government (SUG) condemned the frequent deaths of students due to reckless driving and threatened to block the Abuja-Lagos Highway if urgent measures were not taken.
The SUG President, Benjamin Timothy, stated that a total of 12 students had lost their lives in similar accidents within two months.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Kogi also criticized the government for not addressing the issue, warning that students might resort to drastic measures if nothing changed.
In response, the Security Adviser to the Kogi State Governor assured the protesters that a committee had been set up to investigate the matter and find solutions.
