On Monday, security officers in Rivers State used tear gas on a group of about 200 women who were protesting against the state’s recent political changes.
The women, from the Elleye and Engine communities in Ahoada East Local Government Area, were showing support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara and opposing the appointment of a Sole Administrator, which they saw as a threat to democracy.
The protesters held up placards with messages like “Ibas leave us alone” and “Our democracy is threatened” as they marched and sang in solidarity.
Despite attempts by police to stop the protest, the women refused to back down.
This led to the security officers using tear gas to disperse the crowd, causing chaos as the women fled in different directions.
A video shared online showed some women crying after inhaling the gas, while others sat on the ground, visibly distressed.
Many of them expressed anger and continued to demand the reinstatement of Governor Fubara, shouting phrases like, “No Sim, no Rivers State.”
