Several United States government agencies, including the FBI, IRS, DEA, Department of State, CIA, and the US Attorneys’ offices, are expected to release reports on May 2 related to an investigation involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This comes after a ruling by the US District Court for the District of Columbia, where Judge Beryl Howell ordered the agencies excluding the CIA to disclose the documents following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) suit.
The suit was filed in June 2023 by an American citizen, Aaron Greenspan, who alleged the agencies failed to release documents within the statutory timeframe concerning a purported drug-related investigation from the 1990s involving Tinubu and others.
Greenspan filed a total of 12 FOIA requests between 2022 and 2023 seeking criminal records on four individuals allegedly linked to a drug ring.
The judge dismissed the argument for withholding the documents, calling it illogical.
Although lawyers say the decision can be appealed, the Nigerian Presidency insists the case does not implicate Tinubu and contains no new revelations.
