The Senate has passed the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024 into law.
This is coming after corrections and amendments were made to the original bill which had already been passed in 2023.
The changes came after a report of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), which was presented by the Chairman, Sen. Mohammed Muntari for consideration.
Dockaysworld recalls that President Bola Tinubu had written to the legislature seeking a repeal of the law due to a host of issues including challenges related to the management structure of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELF), applicant eligibility requirements, loan purpose, funding sources and disbursement and repayment procedures.
Following the changes the bill passed a second reading a week before, eventually leading to final passage today.
