The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has warned that mobile and internet services in Lagos and Ogun States could be severely disrupted due to a diesel shortage caused by an ongoing strike by Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), a branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
ATCON President, Tony Emoekpere, explained that the strike—sparked by alleged police harassment of tanker drivers in Lagos—has halted fuel distribution, leaving telecom base stations running dangerously low on diesel.
If the situation continues, millions of users could experience network outages, affecting businesses, emergency services, and daily communications.
ATCON is urging the governors of Lagos and Ogun States to step in and ensure diesel supply to telecom operators to prevent a total blackout.
The association also called on security agencies and petroleum unions to resolve the crisis quickly to protect the country’s connectivity and economy.
