  • The electoral umpire delisted them in obedience to a court order that disqualified the former minister.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made significant amendments to the list of governorship candidates for the upcoming elections in Bayelsa and Imo States, in compliance with court orders.

In Bayelsa State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Timipre Sylva alongside his deputy have been delisted from the roster for the November 11 governorship election.

This move follows a Federal High Court ruling that disqualified Sylva due to having served two terms as the state’s governor.

In response, INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony noted that the Commission is obligated to adhere to court orders regarding the nomination of candidates by political parties, as stipulated in the Nigerian Constitution.

Meanwhile, in Imo State, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate, Uchechukwu Ishiodu, and his running mate, Ahumbe Chiazor, have been added to the list of candidates for the governorship election.

This decision comes as a result of a court order from the Federal High Court, Owerri judicial division, which directed INEC to include the PRP candidate on the list.

Once again, Oriaran-Anthony emphasized INEC’s commitment to upholding court orders concerning the nomination of candidates by political parties, in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution.
