The Senate has moved forward with a legislative proposal to create a Federal College of Education in Igbekebo, Ondo State.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim representing Ondo South, passed its second reading during a plenary session.
Initially introduced on October 12, the bill seeks to bolster Nigeria’s educational framework by establishing an institution dedicated to training competent educators.
The proposed college aims to offer diverse academic and professional programs, including certificates, first degrees, and postgraduate opportunities, while promoting inclusivity regardless of background or beliefs.
Following the discussion, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund to examine the bill further and report within six weeks.
Recall that on Tuesday, the Senate also passed a bill to establish Federal University of Mining in Jos, Plateau State.
Also, a bill was passed for second reading seeking to establish the Federal University of Science and Technology, Okorokorisei in Bayelsa.
In addition to this bill, the Senate is deliberating on several other university proposals at various stages.
These include:
1. Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (Ogun State) – Upgraded from the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro.
2. Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia (Kaduna State) – Initially proposed for Manchok but relocated to Kachia.
3. Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies, Osun State.
4. Nigeria Army College of Education, Sobi, Kwara State.
5. Federal College of Education, Afon, Asa Local Government (Kwara State).
6. Federal University, Okigwe (Imo State).
7. Federal University of Science and Medical Sciences, Egbe (Kogi State).
8. Federal University of Agriculture, Kura. (Kano State)
9. Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.
10. Federal University of Sports, Afuze. (Edo State).
