Nigeria is bracing for another nationwide blackout as the national electricity grid collapsed plunging millions of homes and businesses into darkness.
The country is currently generating only 0.80 megawatts of electricity.
According to the website of the Independent System Operator, which is an autonomous arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), it was observed that the power plants’ contribution to the grid started to decrease around 2pm, dropping to 2,797.16MW from the average of 3,417.99MW around 1pm.
The electricity contribution further declined to 1,020.08 around 3pm before dramatically falling to 0.80 by 4pm.
The Trans-Amadi Power Plant generated 0.80.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company has confirmed the development.
In a statement, the DisCo said all its interface in the Transmission Company of Nigeria stations are out of supply, saying it is unable to provide services to customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
The consequences of this blackout were felt nationwide, as electricity distribution companies (DisCos) struggled to cope with the sudden and prolonged outage.
As at the time of filing this report, the grid is yet to come into full recovery.
This marks the sixth power grid collapse in 2024.
President Bola Tinubu recently said Nigeria’s power generation capacity at about 4.5 gigawatts is shameful.
Since powered generation is measured in megawatts in Nigeria, 4.5 gigawatts would translate to 4,500 megawatts.
The president called for the collaboration of the members to increase Nigeria’s on-grid electricity capacity.
