President Donald Trump has hit back at Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde after she urged him to show compassion at the inauguration.
In a social media post, Trump called the bishop’s words “nasty in tone” and said they brought “politics into the church in an ungracious way.”
Speaking about her plea for mercy, Reverend Budde had said she made the appeal because she knows the struggles of real people and wanted to encourage unity and mercy across differences.
In her words,
“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.”
Budde’s plea mentioned “gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and Independent families,” across the country “who fear for their lives.”
The bishop also spoke up for immigrant workers, including those who may not “have the proper documentation,” saying the vast majority of them are “not criminals” but rather “good neighbors.”
Trump, in his response, criticized the Bishop for her remarks but did not address the substance of her appeal in detail.
