Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations circulating on social media about distributing $15,000 to senators to secure their support for a state of emergency declaration in Rivers State.
The accusations claimed that Akpabio handed out money during a fast-breaking event at his Maitama residence.
The rumours said that the disbursement happened over two days, with $5,000 given on a Tuesday and an additional $10,000 the following day, just before the vote on the emergency declaration.
However, Akpabio denied the reports, describing them as part of a malicious campaign against him.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio addressed the situation for the first time, expressing surprise that a regular fasting event could be tied to bribery rumours.
Eyiboh clarified that the Senate President had been hosting similar gatherings, including during previous years, without any controversy.
He questioned the basis of the allegations, asking why Akpabio would need to offer money to his colleagues.
The Senate and House of Representatives had, in fact, unanimously approved the state of emergency declaration for Rivers State, but there was no evidence linking the decision to any alleged financial inducement.
Akpabio’s media adviser dismissed the dollar-related claims as fabricated stories aimed at tarnishing the Senate President’s image.
As the rumours spread, Akpabio maintained that the accusations were baseless and rooted in political malice rather than fact.
