The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved 13 contracts worth approximately N679 billion for the Ministry of Works.
These contracts aim to facilitate road rehabilitation and new construction projects across various states while ensuring that infrastructure development aligns with available funds.
The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, announced this during a press briefing at the State House after the FEC meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Umahi provided a detailed breakdown of the projects, which cover all geopolitical zones, speaking on the government’s commitment to prioritizing ongoing projects.
He noted that most of these projects were originally awarded under the previous administration, and the current government is focused on their completion.
Among the approved projects are:
Aakalari-Ukuk Road in Bauchi State – Phase One is set for completion within six months at a cost of N11.278 billion.
Uturu-Isikwuato-Akara Road in Abia State – Phase One will take six months to complete at an estimated N5.926 billion.
Zaria-Ukui-Kolomani-Dan Bali-Maraba-Kanya-Subawa-Kasa Road (Kaduna & Katsina States) – A major new project valued at N198 billion, awarded to MotherCat Nigeria Limited, with a 36-month construction timeline.
Rehabilitation of the Kano-Maiduguri Road – Specifically, a section previously terminated from Dantata Sowo has been reassigned to Tractor Nigeria Limited for 18 months at a cost of N128.395 billion.
Bagudu Road in Kebbi State – A 57-kilometer stretch approved for N2.645 billion, with measures in place to protect the ongoing work.
Oba-Nnewi-Arondizogu-Okigwe Road (Imo & Anambra States) – Phase One will undergo a six-month rescoping at a cost of N8.45 billion.
Iyin-Ilawi-Ekiti Road Project – Initially approved for N13.736 billion, but after identifying an error, the correct sum of N15.626 billion was approved.
Additional road projects include:
Ilogu Road (Kwara/Osun States) – N7.556 billion for Phase One (six-month duration).
Wukari-Akwana Road (Taraba State) – N12.615 billion (12-month duration).
Bida-Lapaya-Lambda Road (Niger State) – N39.493 billion for Phase One (six-month duration).
Gada-Zamazuru-Gamji Road (Kebbi State) – N11.976 billion (six-month duration).
Kamakish Road (Oyo State) – N12.35 billion (12-month duration).
Minister Umahi spoke on FEC’s directive to prioritize inherited projects, ensuring that available funds are used efficiently. He also spoke on the importance of protecting ongoing roadwork, particularly surfaces that could be damaged by rainfall.
Furthermore, FEC approved an adjustment to the Outer Marina Shore Protection Project in Lagos.
The project, initially excluding certain federal institutions, now includes shoreline protection for the Nigerian Navy and other federal infrastructure, increasing the contract sum from N144 billion to N176 billion.
Umahi also provided updates on the Charm-Numan Road and Bridge Project, which was severely affected by flooding in October 2024.
The revised contract has now been approved to ensure its completion.
Additionally, the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road dualization will proceed in phases, with the first phase awarded N30 billion to CGC Nigeria Limited.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, stating that all projects will be executed within budgetary allocations to ensure timely completion.
“Our focus is to prioritize projects based on available funds,” Umahi said. “We are ensuring that already completed work is protected from damage, especially from rainfall, by applying the necessary finishing layers.”
