The Federal Government has assured that Nigerians residing in Libya remain safe.
This assurance comes amid reports of mass arrests of Nigerians by Libyan authorities following a recent verdict by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The ruling was issued in response to a complaint from the Nigeria Football Federation, which raised concerns over the harsh treatment faced by the Super Eagles during their visit to Libya.
In response to CAF’s ruling—which awarded Nigeria a 3-0 win and imposed a $50,000 fine on Libya—some local Libyan media have reported stricter actions against undocumented Nigerian residents.
Calls for arrests and fines have circulated, particularly targeting Nigerians working in Libya without official documentation, as reports alleged that their presence strains Libya’s resources.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Nigerians in Libya are continuing their regular activities without interference.
The ministry reiterated that protecting Nigerians abroad remains a central commitment, aiming to uphold their welfare and security in all circumstances.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reiterate that the well-being of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times.”
