Obaseki placed on EFCC watchlist, banned from traveling outside Nigeria

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on its watchlist and imposed a travel restriction on him.

This move is part of ongoing investigations into financial activities during his administration, including allegations of questionable contracts and withdrawals from the state treasury.

The EFCC’s watchlist aims to prevent Obaseki and other former governors from leaving the country while under investigation.

The probe, which commenced shortly after Obaseki left office on November 12, seeks to unravel the details of transactions linked to his administration.

While Obaseki has stated his willingness to cooperate with the EFCC, sources within the agency suggest that investigators are focusing on tracing funds and uncovering irregularities in contracts.

So far, there is no direct link to the former governor, but officials are following leads involving his close associates.

The investigation also recently led to the arrest of five top officials from Obaseki’s administration, including the former Accountant General, over significant cash withdrawals.

The EFCC has pledged to continue its efforts to ensure accountability in governance.
