Fresh Details Emerge Over Alleged Extended Detention of Patience Jonathan’s Domestic Workers

The Bayelsa State High Court has rejected claims that it played a role in the prolonged detention of former First Lady Patience Jonathan’s former domestic workers.

The court clarified that the delays in the trial, which have lasted over six years, were due to frequent changes in the defendants’ defense lawyers.

According to the court’s spokesperson, Julius Nyananyo, the delays occurred as lawyers needed time to cross-examine witnesses, which slowed down the proceedings.

The case involves 15 former domestic workers accused of stealing items from Mrs. Jonathan, including jewelry and air conditioners.

They are facing charges like conspiracy to commit murder, burglary, and armed robbery. One of the detainees has expressed concern over their prolonged detention, stating that the police have not presented evidence against them.

In response to similar claims, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Bayelsa also denied any wrongdoing, refuting allegations that its officials collaborated with Mrs. Jonathan to orchestrate the prolonged detention.

The Bayelsa State High Court emphasized that the defendants’ trial involves serious charges, and it had tried to expedite the case.

However, the changing defense lawyers and the need for a “trial within a trial” have contributed to the delays.

The court also defended its decision to deny bail to some of the accused, stating that bail applications were determined fairly.

This case speaks on the ongoing issues within Nigeria’s criminal justice system, particularly the delays caused by frequent adjournments and the challenges faced by economically disadvantaged defendants.
