Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced that his administration will conduct new local government elections in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment.
The decision comes after the apex court declared the October 5, 2023, elections invalid.
In a state broadcast on Sunday, Fubara assured residents that his government will act according to the law.
He has already consulted his legal team, which expects to obtain the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the ruling by Friday, March 7, 2025.
Once received, the government will examine the judgment and implement it as required.
To ensure local government functions continue smoothly, Fubara has directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take charge of the 23 local councils.
They will manage affairs temporarily until the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission conducts fresh elections.
The governor also instructed outgoing chairmen to formally hand over power to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025.
Amid the political uncertainty, Fubara urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities.
He reassured them that his administration remains focused on governance and maintaining order in the state.
