A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi suffered a “hard landing” on Sunday, ABC News reports.
Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province early Sunday to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev.
State TV said the incident happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with with the nation of Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Rescuers were attempting to reach the crash site, but had been hampered by poor weather condition in the area.
There had been heavy rain reported with some wind.
Fars News reports that contact with the helicopter transporting the Iranian president has been lost.
According to Iran Observer, military drones have now taken off to determine the exact location of President Raisi’s helicopter.
Fresh updates from the IRNA reveal that Dizmar forest is the exact location of the accident of the helicopter carrying President Raisi.
Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian was also on board the helicopter.
