“I was not informed on closure of Independence Bridge, Olukorede Acted Independently” – Dave Umahi

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has stated that he was not informed before the closure of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, which led to severe traffic congestion on Wednesday.

Speaking in Lagos on Thursday, Umahi revealed that President Bola Tinubu had sent him to address the situation after witnessing the difficulties faced by residents.

He clarified that the Federal Government had not authorized the bridge’s closure.

Umahi expressed his displeasure over the incident, acknowledging the need for rehabilitation but stating that proper procedures were not followed.

He explained that while he was aware of the structural issues and had been involved in planning the repairs, he was not notified when the bridge was shut down.

He blamed the decision on the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, stating that she acted independently.

Lagos residents endured heavy traffic following the bridge’s closure, which Kesha confirmed on Monday.
