Ibas Addresses Backlash Over Controversial Appointment

Rear Admiral O.P. Ibas (Rtd), the sole administrator appointed for the local government areas in Rivers State, has responded to criticisms labeling his appointment as unconstitutional.

In a statement released on Monday, Ibas stated that he remains fully committed to maintaining impartiality amidst the ongoing political tension in the state.

Ibas, who previously served as Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara following the expiration of the tenure of the elected local government chairmen.

His appointment has since sparked debate, with critics arguing it contradicts constitutional provisions regarding democratic governance at the local level.

Despite the backlash, Ibas assured the public that he would not allow political influence to affect his duties.

“I will continue to uphold a neutral and professional stance in executing my responsibilities,” he said.

The political tension in Rivers State continues to grow, especially with disputes between the governor and opposing political factions over control of local government structures.

Ibas concluded his statement by urging residents and political leaders to support peace and legal resolutions to the ongoing disputes.
