The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed all police officers to strictly respect human rights when handling pre-trial detentions.
He reminded officers that detaining individuals beyond the legally allowed time is not only illegal but also a violation of their dignity and rights.
Citing Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which protect personal liberty and human dignity, the IGP emphasized that unlawful or prolonged detentions undermine public trust in the police.
He warned that any officer found guilty of such misconduct would face serious consequences.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP urged officers to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability in their dealings with the public.
He stressed that respecting human rights would strengthen the relationship between the police and the communities they serve.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to enforcing the law while ensuring that everyone in custody is treated with dignity and in accordance with legal provisions,” he said.
This directive is part of broader efforts to reform the police force, promoting transparency, efficiency, and respect for human rights.
