Impeached speaker, Mudashiru Obasa is currently presiding over a plenary session at the Lagos State House of Assembly, despite opposition from the majority of lawmakers.
The session, attended by only four lawmakers, took place after security personnel forced open the chamber doors.
The political crisis escalated after Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker, returned to the Assembly with the support of some lawmakers and alleged armed men.
Meanwhile, 36 out of 40 Assembly members have declared their continued support for Mojisola Meranda, who was elected as the new Speaker.
Earlier in the day, lawmakers loyal to Meranda gathered at the Assembly complex, reiterating their decision to remove Obasa.
One of them, speaking anonymously, described Obasa’s leadership as oppressive and insisted that his impeachment would not be reversed.
However, Obasa dismissed claims of his removal, stating that he had only been on vacation and remains the legitimate Speaker.
Tension rose as supporters of Obasa reportedly blocked roads leading to the Assembly complex, forcing motorists to find alternative routes.
Armed individuals were also seen inside the premises, vowing to take control of all offices.
The House Committee Chairman on Information, Strategy, and Security, Stephen Ogundipe, criticized the unfolding events, calling the situation embarrassing.
He urged for calm and condemned the use of force in the legislative chamber.
Despite the standoff, Obasa proceeded with the plenary session, while over 26 lawmakers refused to participate, maintaining their allegiance to Meranda.
