An investigative journalist, Adejuwon Soyinka, has been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to Punch, the journalist, who is the Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa, was arrested at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday.
The news of his arrest was disclosed to the media outlet by one his friends, revealing that Soyinka was apprehended shortly after arriving from the United Kingdom.
No reason, the friend added, has been provided for the arrest of his friend, who had been held incommunicado.
The message read, “Adejuwon Soyinka has been detained by officers of the Department of State Security at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The incident happened around 5.40 am on Sunday, the 25th of August, 2024, shortly after he arrived in Nigeria via a Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom.
“As at the time of this report, no reason had been given for his detention by the security agency. Soyinka has not been reachable as messages and calls to his phone have been unanswered.”
The DSS is yet confirm the arrest. Spokesman for the secret police, Peter Afunanya was quoted to have said when contacted.
“I am not aware of the matter you have raised and have no comments on it,” he said.
This comes 24 hours after the Nigeria Police Force, through its Spokesman, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the force arrested a popular investigative journalist, Bristol Isaac Tamunobiefiri, popularly known on X as PIDOM Nigeria.
ACP Adejobi said PIDOM was arrested on August 5, 2024, in his hotel room in Rivers State.
The Force image maker added that the suspect was apprehended on allegations of committing serious offenses that undermine the integrity of government operations.
He said there are several allegations levelled against the suspect, including unlawful possession, leakages of classified documents, cyber related offences, and others.
