Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (BHT/ISWAP) terrorists have attacked a Nigerian military base in the Wajiroko area of Borno State, killing at least three soldiers and injuring the Brigade Commander and two others.
The attack occurred around 10 p.m. on Monday, and according to Sahara Reporters, it resulted in heavy casualties among the troops.
According to a military report obtained on Tuesday, the terrorists overran the Forward Operating Base (FOB), forcing soldiers to retreat toward Sabongari.
Surveillance footage also showed visible fire around the base, suggesting it may have been taken over by the insurgents.
Following the attack, the Brigade immediately called for air support and sent a reinforcement team. However, the team ran into an improvised explosive device (IED) along the route.
A second reinforcement team, led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General UF Abubakar, was also deployed.
While on their way, the Commander’s vehicle hit another IED between Damboa and Azir Bridge, resulting in the death of three soldiers and injuries to the Brigade Commander and two other personnel.
The military report stated: “At approximately 242205A MAR 25, own troops at FOB Wajiroko came under attack by BHT/ISWAP terrorists. This prompted the Brigade to call for air support in addition to deploying a reinforcement team immediately. However, the team encountered an IED along the MSR. A second team led by the Brigade Commander was dispatched, but their vehicle also struck an IED, resulting in casualties.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
However, sources confirmed that reinforcement efforts are ongoing, and troops remain on high alert as they monitor the situation.
The identities of the slain soldiers have not been released, as the military is yet to inform their families.
The security situation in the area remains tense, with troops maintaining maximum vigilance.
