The body of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency, has been found near the Second Niger Bridge.
His remains were found by security operatives on Thursday, February 6, 2025, after weeks of search efforts.
Azuka was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, while returning home for Christmas.
He was abducted at gunpoint along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, in what eyewitnesses described as a swift operation that lasted less than five minutes.
His disappearance sparked concerns, with security agencies launching an investigation and search efforts to locate him.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, a joint security team, including police officers and members of the Anambra Vigilante Group, found the decomposed remains of the lawmaker during a routine patrol near the Second Niger Bridge.
The police confirmed that the area was immediately secured to prevent interference with the crime scene as investigations continue.
The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that security operatives had been working tirelessly to track down the kidnappers and secure Azuka’s release before the tragic discovery.
He assured the public that efforts were ongoing to arrest those responsible.
Justice Azuka, a prominent member of the Labour Party, had recently regained his legislative seat following a legal battle that overturned the election victory of Douglas Egbuna from the Peoples Democratic Party.
The court ruled in Azuka’s favour, allowing him to reclaim his mandate in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
This is very callous and barbaric. I repeat, until capital punishment is restored in the penal laws of Nigeria, these incidents will not minimize. Such people, when convicted, should be summarily executed by firing squad. Including kidnappers and terrorists, not excluding these fantastically corrupt people who have milked the country dry. Nigeria is still bleeding because of some of these ugly incidents.
