The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has been suspended by the university’s Governing Council.
He was suspended following a sexual harassment allegation brought against him by a senior official of the institution, Engineer Folasade Adebayo.
The suspension was decided during an emergency online meeting held by the Governing Council on Monday, April 14, 2025.
This action came shortly after the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reportedly expressed anger over how the university had earlier handled the allegation.
According to reports, the Council had initially dismissed the complaint and instead asked the complainant to apologise, a decision that drew criticism from the minister.
He was said to have personally reached out to the Chairman of the Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, to express his displeasure and demand action.
In response, the Governing Council convened the emergency meeting and resolved to suspend Professor Fasina.
However, the Vice Chancellor is said to have appealed for a softer exit, requesting to proceed on his accumulated leave rather than face outright suspension.
Given that he has less than six months left in his tenure, the Council approved the leave request.
He will be away for six months, which covers 126 working days out of his total 228-day leave entitlement, effectively ending his term early.
During this period, Professor Olubunmi Samuel Shittu, a Professor of Soil Science and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), has been appointed to serve as Acting Vice Chancellor.
His appointment also took effect on April 14, 2025, the same day Professor Fasina’s suspension was enforced.
