The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has provided an update on the crude oil spill in Obololi, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State.
The spill occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) 16-inch Nun River-Kolo Creek pipeline.
NOSDRA, which oversees oil spill incidents in Nigeria, sent a team to investigate the spill on February 18, 2025.
The team included representatives from Shell, the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment, and local community members.
Key findings from the investigation:
The exact cause of the spill is still unknown because the affected pipeline is underwater.
Shell is setting up a coffer dam (a temporary structure) to access the leak point.
The spill area has been contained.
Temporary storage tanks are on the way to store recovered oil.
Oil recovery efforts will begin on February 21, 2025.
NOSDRA is actively monitoring the situation and will provide more updates as needed.
