The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, has proposed extending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme from one year to two years.
He made this suggestion during a meeting with the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, in Abuja.
Alausa also recommended expanding the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme for corps members.
Additionally, he called for more graduate teachers to be deployed in rural schools to address staffing shortages.
Alausa praised the NYSC’s efforts to combat certificate fraud among foreign-trained graduates in West Africa and welcomed the resolution of issues regarding part-time OND graduates who had previously been exempted from the national service.
He also stated ongoing efforts to digitize the verification process for foreign-trained Nigerian graduates.
Brigadier General Nafiu acknowledged the Ministry of Education’s progress in the education sector and called for a database to track Nigerian students studying abroad to help prevent fake degrees.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, expressed the Ministry’s commitment to working more closely with NYSC to improve the education system in the country.
