The Nigerian police in Ondo State have summoned a lawyer, Wale Omolegbon Odusola, after he criticised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration and the state’s 2024 budget on Facebook.
Odusola accused the state government of planning a cyberstalking law to silence critics on social media.
He claimed the state’s Attorney General, Olukayode Ajulo, discussed the proposed law during a recent meeting.
Odusola described the move as an attack on free speech, likening it to federal cyber laws often used to suppress opposition voices.
In his Facebook posts, Odusola also accused the state of neglecting Ilaje and Ikale communities in the 2024 budget.
He revealed that Owo received 12 projects worth ₦3 billion, while Ilaje was only allocated one road project valued at ₦100 million. Okitipupa, he added, got three projects totalling ₦390 million.
Odusola insisted that highlighting this neglect was not a crime, stressing that Ilaje and Ikale deserve fair development.
He praised former Governor Olusegun Mimiko for listening to public criticism and using it to improve governance, urging Governor Aiyedatiwa to do the same.
He further criticised the government for allocating only ₦9.45 million to the state’s fire service, describing the amount as shameful and inadequate for emergency response.
Following his online comments, Odusola received a police invitation letter dated 12th February 2025, accusing him of “conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.” He has been directed to appear at the police command in Akure on Monday, 17th February 2025.
