The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all chairmanship and councillorship positions in Osun State’s 30 local government areas.
The results were announced on Saturday by the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye.
The election took place despite warnings from the police and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, who had advised that the process be halted.
However, OSSIEC proceeded, citing a ruling from the Osun State High Court in Ilesa that ordered elections for vacant chairmanship and councillorship positions.
Voting started early in the morning across all local government areas, with Governor Ademola Adeleke casting his vote in Ede North LGA.
He described the process as peaceful and urged residents to avoid violence.
Meanwhile, the OSSIEC chairman accused the police of sealing the commission’s headquarters in Osogbo and arresting some officials.
To continue its work, the commission relocated to an undisclosed location.
The police had earlier warned of potential security threats linked to the election.
The AGF had also argued that the election should not proceed, referencing a Court of Appeal ruling on February 10, which overturned an earlier Federal High Court decision from November 2022.
The ruling reinstated the previously sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen.
Tensions have been high in Osun State, with clashes between APC and PDP supporters resulting in at least six deaths.
Governor Adeleke had previously accused APC members of attempting to seize control of local government offices with security backing.
He also called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and caution APC leader and minister Gboyega Oyetola.
Despite the warnings, the situation escalated, leading to violence.
