A protest is currently rocking the National Assembly complex in Abuja as police officers fired tear gas to disperse supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The demonstrators arrived early Wednesday morning, gathering at the assembly gate around 8 a.m. as lawmakers prepared for the day’s plenary session.
However, security operatives quickly intervened, releasing tear gas canisters to break up the crowd.
The protesters, unable to continue at the National Assembly gate, moved to the Unity Fountain, where they resumed their demonstration.
The protesters are demanding that Senate President Godswill Akpabio step down for proper investigation into Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations.
Some of their banners read, “Akpabio Must Go” and “Protect Women’s Rights”.
The protest follows a recent disagreement between Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi Central, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
On February 20, the two clashed over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber, leading to her referral to the Senate disciplinary committee.
In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a N100 billion defamation lawsuit against Akpabio, later accusing him of tarnishing her image and punishing her for rejecting his alleged advances.
