Kilmer first gained fame in 1984 with his role in the comedy Top Secret!, but his breakthrough came in 1986 when he starred as Iceman in Top Gun, alongside Tom Cruise’s Maverick.

In 1995, Kilmer took on the role of Batman in Batman Forever, becoming part of the legendary lineup of actors who portrayed the Gotham vigilante.

Despite some controversy surrounding his on-set behaviour, many who worked with him described him as charismatic and passionate about his craft.

Born Val Edward Kilmer on December 31, 1959, he was the youngest student ever admitted to Juilliard’s drama department.

Although he aimed for serious acting roles, he often found himself in big-budget Hollywood productions.

After a period of lesser-known films, Kilmer attempted a comeback with a stage show about Mark Twain, but his plans were halted by his cancer diagnosis.

His struggles and legacy were explored in the 2021 documentary Val, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film portrayed his rise to stardom, personal challenges, and ultimate resilience.

In 2022, Kilmer made a special appearance in Top Gun: Maverick, reprising his role as Iceman, with his real-life health struggles integrated into the character.

Reflecting on his life, Kilmer once wrote:
“For more than half a century, I have been honing my art—whether in literature, movies, poetry, painting, or music. I have truly lived a magical life.”

He is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.
