The Nigerian Presidency has strongly denied former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claims that he is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over financial transactions linked to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Atiku had alleged on Thursday that the EFCC was probing him in connection with financial dealings involving Sanwo-Olu.
However, in a statement on Friday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed these claims as false and baseless.
Onanuga accused Atiku of attempting to remain politically relevant by spreading misinformation and relying on social media gossip.
He stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on addressing the country’s challenges and does not have time for political distractions.
“The EFCC, as an independent institution, carries out its duties without external influence,” Onanuga said, emphasizing that any claim suggesting otherwise undermines the agency’s credibility.
He also criticized Atiku for refusing to adopt the role of a statesman after his defeat in the 2023 presidential election, stating that instead of making meaningful contributions to national development, Atiku continues to create division with unfounded accusations.
The Presidency urged Atiku to focus on constructive discussions that promote unity, economic growth, and democracy rather than resorting to what it called “desperate attempts” to attract attention.
