First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has revealed why she visited former military leaders, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, at their residences in Minna, Niger State.
Accompanied by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, and other officials, she was received at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport by Governor Muhammed Umar Bago, his wife, and top government officials.
The delegation then proceeded to General Babangida’s residence for a closed-door meeting that lasted over an hour before heading to Abdulsalami’s home for another private discussion.
Speaking on her visit, Tinubu described both leaders as national figures who have played key roles in Nigeria’s development.
She disclosed that her visit was a private one, not driven by political reasons.
She also acknowledged their continuous support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“It is right for me to come here to greet them because they are fathers of the nation.
“I, however, have to say that my visits to the former Nigerian leaders are private visits without any political undertone, because I had always tried to visit them but for exigencies of duties.
“The Nigerian leaders have been very supportive of government of President Bola Tinubu and they have always encouraged Mr. President,” she declared.
During her stop at the Niger State Government House, the First Lady donated ₦100 million to victims of recent disasters, including the Dikko tanker explosion, the Sabon-Pegi dynamite explosion, and a collapsed mine in Munya.
She instructed that each affected family receive ₦1 million, while the remaining ₦30 million be distributed for food and relief materials by the governor’s wife, Hajia Fatima Bago.
Tinubu urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid scooping fuel from overturned tankers.
Governor Bago expressed gratitude for her support and assured that the funds would be properly utilized to assist the victims.
