The convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in a tragic accident on Thursday in Akure, Ondo State.
The accident led to the death of a seven-year-old girl named Saratu Lawal.
The incident happened at Oba Ile as the First Lady was on her way from the airport to an official event in the state capital.
One of the vehicles in the convoy, described as a butter-coloured Hilux, reportedly struck the young girl, who was a student of an Arabic school in the Shasha area.
Saratu was rushed to a nearby primary healthcare facility in an effort to save her, but she did not survive.
Her lifeless body was later handed over to her family for burial according to Islamic customs.
The First Lady was in Akure to launch the South-West phase of the Renewed Hope Initiative, a programme aimed at supporting women and girls.
As part of the event, professional kits including Crocs and scrubs were meant to be distributed to nurses and midwives.
Attempts to get comments from the Ondo State Police spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olushola, were unsuccessful as calls were not answered and messages went unanswered at the time of reporting.
